Education and Career Option

One should never deprive their child from choosing a career, a life for themselves. It is cruel and absurd to bind your child with your choice of career. Freedom is realizing that you have a choice. So, it is important for every parents to give their child the freedom of choice for their most vital decision of life.

Education Is A Need

Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” This statement is absolutely true, the word education comes from the Latin word ‘educatio’ Which means bringing up. Education is what sets apart a social and a wild animal. Education is necessary to lead a happy and free life.

According to Brian Herbert “The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a CHOICE.”

In a country like India, where the size of population is multiplying in geometric progression, A large section of the country is still needs basic education. It is necessary to introduce a system of education that will satisfy the needs and aspirations of modern—free India. It must spread even to the remotest village and backward classes. But unfortunately people started taking education as a program to show off. It has became a regularity where parents force their own dreams on their children. The need for education is to build better lives, not to be better than your friend’s child.

Choosing a career: Obsession With Choosing Science

In India, getting admission in science is a matter of prestige. Now-a-days parents have became highly obsessed with their child choosing the science stream. Every other parent wants their child to become a doctor or an engineer

“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.„ – Margret Mead

Most parents either prefer their child to follow their footsteps and choose the same profession or sometimes, parents try to force their unfulfilled dreams upon their children. For most of the parents consider literature, philosophy, rhetoric, religion etc. as useless knowledge. Arts and humanities is perceived as the section of the weaker intelligence.

My intention is not to degrade the science stream or popularizing humanities. On the contrary, one can never compare them. They are both equally important for the development of intellect, emotions and imagination of students. When adults start considering science as smart and humanities as not so smart, we create an intellectual divide in the society. We forget the some of the most intellectual minds to exist were not students of science.

Comparing One’s Child With Others

Envy must never become a guiding factor for choosing a right path for yourself. Another problem that lurks around most of us is that we tend to compare our children with our neighbours’ or friends’. While choosing a career option, we must not forget what our strengths are.

Albert Einstein wrote, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” The question I have for you at this point of our journey together is, “What is your genius?”

There is ample beauty in diversity. One should never forget that their child is an individual which means we are all unique. It is normal for us to have different interest than others.

Effects On Teenagers

Wrong career choice due to the peer pressure could be disastrous for the teenagers. By snatching their power of choice, we could push them into depression, anxiety, inferiority complex and other severe  psychological problems. The teens succumb to their mental pressure and start on a new journey towards the decline of self-worth and self-esteem. They are scared to disappoint their parents, and their parents are scared to disappoint the society. Finally, they walk the path they are most uncomfortable in sometimes.

Being Reasonable

I have short-listed some thoughts after much pondering:

  • Let the young adults decide and choose their own career.
  • We must not try to fulfil our unfulfilled dreams and aspirations through our kids
  • As parents, we must support our children to achieve their dreams.
  • It is important to use motivation and encouragement as tools to help our children on a path their choice and help them achieve success.
  • We must not let our children lose their dreams and individuality.

It’s time that Indian parents and elders start acknowledging their children as intelligent beings and allow them to follow their passions and dreams. Let them be free to choose their own career.
