A Woman’s Dignity Degraded By Men In Power

Respect A Woman's Dignity
Respect A Woman's Dignity

It is highly appalling and disgusting when we witness a man in power demeans and degrades a woman’s dignity. We have seen it before and I am pretty sure that it is not the last one either. What is even more disturbing is that the people surrounding the “Important Man” laugh along and cheer him.

Targeting of woman’s dignity – A tool for oppression

“With great power comes great responsibility” as Uncle Ben told us, it is absolutely true! Some men need to learn from him. When women get mocked, especially by those who are considered to be the role model for the millions, we can only imagine where this world is headed. However, come to think of it a bit deeper, you will notice that these were mainly unscripted, spontaneous responses by these men. It tells us a lot about their way of thinking and mindset.

Ante penultimate: A master-stroke

In a recent incident at the Rajya Sabha, The Prime Minster of India, Narendra Modi said

Sabhapati ji meri aapse vinti hai Renuka ji ko kuch mat kahiye. Ramayan serial ke baad aisi hansi sunne ka saubhagya aaj jaake mila hai.” (Chairman sir, I request you to not say anything to Renuka ji. After the Ramayan serial, we have got the fortune of hearing this kind of laughter today) It was very disturbing to see a person of such high stature stooping so low to try to demean a woman’s dignity. What was worse that you could see the feeling of joy in the faces of people surrounding him. Everyone cheered and banged their desks to applaud such a magnificent spectacle. Or, that’s what it was to them. And then I sit back and think, are these the people who are governing this sovereign nation?

Venkaiah Naidu didn’t shy away from chiding Renuka Chowdary either by stating that she should go see a doctor if there’s something wrong with her. This ignominious attitude towards a lady surfaced only because she Laughed Out Loud!

Penultimate: The notorious vulgur

Rodrigo Duterte, president of the Philippines has managed to stay in the controversy because

of his utmost respect for women. “If you had raped three, I will admit it, that’s on me.” he said in an address to the soldiers of Mindanao island while imposing the martial law. That was not the first time he degraded a woman’s dignity with a rape remark. During his presidential election, he recalled a prison outbreak in 1989 where Jacqueline Hamill, an Australian missionary, who was working in the jail was raped and murdered. The inmates had lined up to rape her, on which Duterte said, “They raped all of the women … There was this Australian lay minister … when they took them out … I saw her face and I thought: “Son of a bitch. what a pity … they raped her, they all lined up. I was mad she was raped but she was so beautiful. I thought, the mayor should have been first.” Again, the sad part is that he was surrounded by the people who laughed at this funny joke. As if that wasn’t enough, they elected him to be the president of the country.

After becoming the president there was another display of heartfelt respect for women in his speech while addressing a group of former communist soldiers in Malacañang. “Tell the soldiers. There’s a new order coming from the mayor. We won’t kill you. We will just shoot your (women rebels) vagina,” he said adding, “If there is no vagina, it would be useless,”

Donald Trump had an awesome reputation even before he became the 45th POTUS

(President Of The United States). While speaking to Esquire magazine in 1991, he referred to women as “Piece of ass”. Trump reportedly said, “You know, it doesn’t really matter what [they] write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.”

In 1992, according to the New York Magazine, Trump commented about Katrina Witt, an Olympic Gold Medallist. He said, “Wonderful looking while on the ice but up close and personal, she could only be described as attractive if you like a woman with a bad complexion who is built like a linebacker”.

Finally, he got a place on the wall of fame when his “pussy grabbing” statement surfaced and how he would kiss a woman without waiting for her consent. This definitely got him a Number 1 in my books. No one can really beat this and still become the president of the most powerful country in this world with a highly liberated and free women.

Social impact of such leaders

As the definition goes, “A leader is a person who leads or commands a group of people, an organisation or a country,” must have a virtue that leads people towards goodness of mankind. Unfortunately, as much as these leaders talk about putting their country first and taking it to the new heights, it does just opposite. When they make statements that degrades a woman’s dignity, or even suggests so, they create a standard. It acts as a signal to trigger such behaviour as normal. That is when the world would become a really scary place.
